Today, we were guests of the beloved people at Abasan Al-Kabira Municipality, located at the far east of Khan Younis Governorate. It was a day filled with beauty and wonder, part of the dialogue sessions under the project “Enhancing the Role of Civil Society Organizations and Municipalities in Environmental Protection in the Gaza Strip.”
The Abasan Al-Kabira Municipality’s Public Relations and Media Department hosted a dialogue session for the project “Enhancing the Role of Civil Society Organizations and Municipalities in Environmental Protection in the Gaza Strip.”
The session was attended by project implementers and partners, including the Bayader Society for Environment, Development, and Islamic Relief, along with representatives from civil society organizations, municipalities, and community accountability committees.
The session was opened by the Municipality’s Mayor, Dr. Anwar Abu Zureifa, who welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the important role played by Bayader Society, Islamic Relief, and civil society institutions in supporting and protecting the environment through various methods that improve the quality of life in the targeted areas.
Engineer Aaed Al-Breem, Executive Director of Bayader Society for Environment and Development, praised the nature of cooperation among different sectors of society and the need for joint efforts to advance and protect the environment in optimal ways. He emphasized the role of municipalities, civil society organizations, and community accountability committees in this regard, and expressed his gratitude to Abasan Al-Kabira Municipality for hosting this meeting.
Mr. Tamer Abu Zahri, Head of the Water and Environment Unit at Islamic Relief, appreciated the efforts aimed at making the project a success. He highlighted that environmental challenges are a priority for Islamic Relief in improving the quality of life for the residents. He assured that Islamic Relief is committed to supporting environmental protection projects.
Dr. Ahmed Helles, an environmental expert and consultant for the Gaza Environmental Protection Project, emphasized the need for collaboration and expertise from all involved parties to develop initiatives that meet the needs of residents in the targeted areas, providing solutions to improve the environment. He also stressed the importance of awareness campaigns to enhance community understanding in line with the project’s overall goals.
The meeting included representatives from public relations departments in municipalities of the eastern region, as well as representatives from community accountability committees and municipal civil society organizations.
This project is funded by Islamic Relief Sweden, with a grant from Sida through Form Sif, and is implemented by Islamic Relief Palestine in cooperation with Bayader Society for Environment and Development.
It is worth mentioning that the municipality is working to achieve the goals of its strategic plan, which includes providing the best environmental quality in the town through supporting and implementing projects that achieve this aim.
