About NIED

National Institute for Environment and Development (NIED) is a joint-stock limited liability organization established in 2015 and officially registered in 2018 under number (563161827) in compliance with Commercial Companies Law 7/2012 in the Ministry of National Economy of Palestine. The institute is the first in the Gaza Strip to demonstrate a developmental and environmental nature whose core work is the environment and health-focused projects in parallel with social, economic, and managerial plans, projects, and programs.

NIED endeavors to assume an effective role in developing all aspects of life in Palestine and in the Gaza Strip particularly through protecting the environment and its components.

As the institute implements many strategic developmental plans, projects, and programs to tackle environmental, water, and public health-related issues, NIED aims to develop the capacity of the Gaza’s residents in all life aspects. Furthermore, it aspires to achieve social, economic, cultural, and managerial development at governmental institutions and NGOs.                                      NIED is characterized by a qualified staff that consists of experts and consultants holding high academic certificates and enjoying long, wide, and hands-on experience, international and local, related to managing projects focusing on the institute’s core work, which includes:

Institute Areas of Work

  • Implementing and following up projects and programs related to water, the environment, and the public health infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
  • Conducting and following up projects and programs aimed to raise awareness and promote cultural values to improve the general attitude of society and culture in addition to highlighting the value of the environment and natural resources.
  • Providing technical and managerial support pertaining to social, economic, and managerial aspects of local institutions.
  • Carrying out surveys, researches, and technical and scientific reports related to implemented projects and programs.
  • Building capacities and developing awareness-raising, training, staff development programs for governmental and non-governmental institutions including the NGOs and private bodies.
  • Evaluating projects, preparing feasibility studies, and developing follow-up plans for developmental and relief projects.
  • Drawing up plans, developing strategies, building up organizational structures, and writing job descriptions, with details on financial, technical, and managerial aspects, for institutions and bodies working in the field of development and delivering services.
  • Writing and putting forward project proposals and fundraising mechanisms for NGOs.
  • Preparing and developing training, rehabilitation, and awareness-raising programs and implementing them according to plans and strategies using appropriate materials.
Vision

The institute seeks to attain a high and distinctive rank locally and internationally through a clear vision and lofty objectives. It aspires to assume the role of a leading and central organization that wins the trust of all stakeholders. NIED shoulders the responsibility of implementing all projects, programs, activities, and interventions pertaining to the environment and public health under sustainable development projects that aim to develop individual and collective performance in different fields: management, strategic planning, economy, accounting, society, and family development. While conducting activities, NIED puts into consideration local and international quality-assurance standards and the utilization of technology.

Mission

NIED places faith in humans, individually and collectively, and in their awareness and culture. It also believes in the activities and interventions of a human as an essential pillar for development and progress. In addition, NIED values the importance of a healthy environment, its different components and natural resources, which has to be protected from pollution or degradation and secured for the future generations; thus, all can live healthily and enjoy a decent life with social justice and balanced economy.  

Indeed, NIED tries to achieve this goal utilizing its full capacity through enhancing and exercising all the principles and concepts of sustainable environment, good governance, competent management, integrity, transparency at all humanitarian work sectors: environmental, managerial, economic, and cultural. The institute also aims to promote the aforementioned values among governmental and non-governmental organizations through plans, projects, and programs implemented by NIED with controlled tools, well-structured methodologies, clear working mechanisms, and specific objectives that fulfill the clients’ needs. 

Furthermore, NIED enormously focuses on social integration, especially of women and youth, to accomplish development for that they are boundless energies and valuable human resources by which development activities would be boosted and accelerated, thus serving the present and future generations.

Objectives

Key Objective

The key objective of NIED is the improvement of the life of a Palestinian individual through enhancing the concepts of sustainable development that protect the environment and all of its components, ensure economic development and prosperity, and safeguard social justice and stability. The Institute accomplishes its primary objective through the implementation of all kinds of developmental projects and emergency and non-emergency appeals utilizing the best tools and methods compatible with technological advances and after a thorough study for available recourses and capabilities.

Special Objectives

NIED has many special objectives set up to achieve the institute’s key objective, which include: 

  • Being a leading institution that incubates highly competent staff and professional technical and scientific experiences. The institute assumes the responsibility of implementing projects, programs, and developmental and environmental interventions with solid professional skills and mechanisms trusted by clients.
  • Preparing competent staffs and professional experts who are qualified to work as technicians or trainers, thus ensuring the communication of cultural values to and raising awareness among all social groups and contributing to development and prosperity in a broad sense.
  • Enhancing the performance and developing plans, programs, strategies for institutions, companies, and NGOs at environmental, health, managerial, financial, planning, and evaluation levels in addition to monitoring, following-up, and enhancement.
  • Reserving the limited environmental and water resources in Palestine through the implementation of relevant projects that target people and infrastructure equally.
  • Promoting and enhancing human rights and providing protection to the most vulnerable groups such as children, women, and elderly people. NIED puts all these groups into consideration while planning or implementing environmental, managerial, economic, social, cultural, or other projects or programs.
  • Activating and enhancing the role of women and youth in development at all levels for that these groups enjoy an integral and critical role in development and prosperity.

Principles

NIED adopts basic principles derived from its vision, mission, and objectives, to develop, mentor, and implement projects, programs, and interventions, which are:

  • Respecting human rights and enhancing the concepts and principles of social protection for the most vulnerable groups that suffer from an increasing marginalization, including children, women, disabled persons, and elderly people.
  • Giving urgent priority to the development of human resources and energies through promoting positive cultural values, heightening social awareness, and enhancing effective participation of all social groups, given that NIED believes in the role of individuals and families to develop the present and future of society.
  • Demonstrating a profound belief in the importance of developing the capacities of staffs at local institutions, including public and private ones, as this leads to an enormous and effective enhancement at the level of performance and delivered services.
  • Paying special attention to devising plans and strategies, conducting needs assessment studies, and carrying out field and scientific surveys needed to improve the work mechanisms of projects and organizations. Furthermore, such studies facilitate the best utilization of available resources and capabilities, thus ensuring the most possible performance.
  • Expressing full and unconditional belief in the role of the law to organize and enhance performance in addition to protecting rights and prompting people to honor duties among society within institutional and social work for achieving prosperity and development.
  • Believing in the critical role of women, who are the half of society, and youth, the pillars of the future, in development within the projects, programs, and interventions that NIED seeks to implement responsibly.
